The role of music in Grenada, West Indies has traditionally been to pass on knowledges, values, and ideals; and to provide a means of connecting to one another through expressing commonality of experience, ancestry, and nationhood. This paper explores how Eric Matthew Gairy, during his era of political leadership in Grenada (1951-1979), exploited the transmission and performance of music in very specific ways to further his career politically and exert power over Grenadian society. This historical case study of Grenada, where music was deliberately used as a method of supporting perceived social and political binaries, sheds light upon the power dynamics that are at play when we uplift certain musics in the classroom, and silence others.
WITH THE END OF THE COLD WAR, U.S. ASSISTANCE TO GRENADA DRIED UP AND GRENADA WAS LEFT TO THE MERCY OF THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. NOW, GRENADA AND THE OTHER SMALL ISLAND-NATIONS IN THE REGION FIND THEMSELVES WHIPSAWED BETWEEN GIANT COMMERCIAL BLOCS IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE. MEANWHILE, VIKTOR KOZENY, A CZECH-BORN, HARVARD-EDUCATED ENTREPRENEUR NICKNAMED THE "PIRATE OF PRAGUE" HAS PLEDGED MILLIONS TOWARD GRENADA'S TOURISM AND MARKETING. THIS IS UNFORTUNATE FOR THE COUNTRY AS KOZENY'S "FRIENDSHIP" WITH GRENADA'S GOVERNMENT PROVES THAT THE COUNTRY IS NOW ALMOST COMPLETELY UNDER THE SPELL OF A WELL-HEELED POLITICAL MACHINE.
ARTICLE EXAMINES POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN GRENADA SINCE ITS 1979 REVOLUTION, ASSESSING THE ABILITY OF THE PEOPLE'S REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT'S PROGRAMS TO FOSTER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE GOVERNMENT'S RELATIVE SUCCESS IN RESTORING ORDER TO THE ECONOMY IS NOTED, AND, DESPITE THE RHETORIC OF NON-ALIGNMENT, GRENADA'S FOREIGN POLICY ALLIANCE WITH CUBA IS DESCRIBED.
THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE U.S. INVASION OF GRENADA, THE RELATIONS WITH THE SOVIET UNION AND REGIONAL POLITICAL MOVEMENTS. INTERRIM REPORTS FROM THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT CLAIMED THAT THE ISLAND (S) WAS "A VICTIM OF SOVIET INTERNATIONALISM." THE AMERICAN INVASION IS DOCUMENTED BY SOME 17 TONS OF DOCUMENTS, MANY OF WHICH REFER TO THE "NEW JEWEL" MOVEMENT SUPPORTED BY THE U.S.S.R. THE QUESTION IS POSED AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THE RUSSIANS WERE USING GRENADA AS A BASE FOR A SOVIET THRUST INTO THE CARIBBEAN. RELATIONSHIPS WITH COMMUNIST PARTIES IN OTHER CARIBBEAN AND LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES AND POLITICAL PARTIES ARE ESTABLISHED. THE QUESTION OF AN "ARMS BUILDUP" IS ADDRESSED AND REFUTED IN THE SENSE THAT THE REAGAN ADMINISTRATION TOOK THE POSITION THAT THE PRESENCE OF SOVIET ADVISORS AND ARMS FAR EXCEEDED THE NEEDS OF THE ISLAND.
This 2014 Article IV Consultation highlights that Grenadaâ??s economy continues to face significant headwinds after a decade of natural disasters and economic shocks coalesced into a deep economic crisis by 2011â??2012. Economic activity declined by more than 8 percent of GDP from peak to trough (2008â??2012) as tourism and construction collapsed. After almost four years of decline, real GDP grew by 1.5 percent in 2013. To address the fiscal crisis, the authorities have initiated fiscal adjustment as part of their 2014 budget, and have subsequently approved a large package of revenue measures

In the Caribbean, the relevance and appropriateness of IMF policies continue to be fiercely challenged. This study deals with specific aspects of Grenada's Extended Fund Facility program which was approved by the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) in mid-1983 and aborted in October of the same year, following the US invasion of the country. It is important to document this experience not only for historical reasons but also because Grenada in 1983 was characterized by certain economic and geopolitical features that contributed to the almost unprecedented nature of the experience
